At Blonde Poetry, we think of lived-in colour as colour designed with the weeks and months after your appointment in mind.
It’s about placement, not just the finished look
Lived-in colour is less about following one particular technique and more about how your stylist uses placement, depth and tone to work with your natural hair.
Rather than creating a result that relies on frequent root touch-ups to keep looking fresh, the colour is designed to blend more softly as your natural hair grows through.
So yes, we want your hair to look beautiful when you leave the salon. But we're also thinking about what it's going to look like eight, ten or twelve weeks later, depending on what works with your real life too.
Who is lived-in colour good for?
Lived-in colour can work beautifully across blondes, brunettes and many different hair types, but it's particularly worth considering if you:
- prefer longer gaps between colour appointments
- don't love seeing a defined regrowth line
- want dimension rather than one flat colour
- like a softer, more natural-looking result
- are growing out existing colour and want a more considered transition
- want your colour plan to work around how often you realistically want to visit the salon

So, is lived-in colour balayage?
Not necessarily.
This is probably where some of the confusion comes from.
Your stylist might use balayage, foils, toning, glossing, root shadows or a combination of techniques to create your result. The exact approach depends on your starting point and where you want to go.
What makes the colour feel lived-in is the overall plan: thoughtful placement, considered dimension and a result designed to grow out softly.
That's also why two clients asking for lived-in blonde might have completely different colour services.
Is lived-in colour really low maintenance?
We'd call it lower maintenance, rather than no maintenance.
Your colour may allow you to leave longer between major appointments, but beautiful hair still needs looking after. Depending on your colour and hair, that might mean a gloss or toner between larger appointments, regular trims, treatments or professional homecare.
The difference is that your maintenance can be planned around you.
You shouldn't have to panic because you've gone a couple of weeks past a set number of weeks. The whole idea is to create something that continues to look considered as it grows.
Looking after lived-in colour at home
What happens after you leave the salon makes a difference too.
Professional colour is an investment, and using the right products for your particular hair can help protect its condition and keep your colour looking beautiful between appointments.
