Hair Extension Aftercare: Everything You Need to Know

Hair extensions are an investment in both your hair and your time, and how they wear over time depends just as much on aftercare as it does on the work done in salon. This guide outlines how to care for your extensions properly, what to expect, and when to reach out for support.

Hair extensions are an investment in both your hair and your time, and how they wear over time depends just as much on aftercare as it does on the work done in salon. This guide outlines how to care for your extensions properly, what to expect, and when to reach out for support.

At Blonde Poetry, extension aftercare is a shared responsibility. Our role is to apply and maintain your extensions with care and expertise. Your role is to follow the guidance provided so your hair stays healthy, comfortable and looking its best.

The First 24 - 48 Hours

After your extension appointment, it’s important to allow time for the attachments to settle.

During the first 24 - 48 hours, avoid:

  • washing your hair unless advised otherwise

  • excessive heat near the bonds or attachments

  • tight styles that place tension on the roots

A slight feeling of awareness or tightness can be normal at first. Ongoing discomfort, pain or concern is not - if something doesn’t feel right, contact the salon as soon as possible.

Washing Your Hair Extensions

Extensions should be washed gently only sometimes.

  • Wash your hair only as often as recommended by your stylist

  • Apply shampoo at the scalp, allowing the lather to cleanse through the lengths

  • Avoid rough scrubbing, flipping hair upside down or piling hair on top of the head

  • Apply conditioner and masks through the mid-lengths and ends only, avoiding attachment points unless directed

Over-washing, incorrect product placement or unsuitable products can shorten the lifespan of your extensions and place unnecessary stress on your natural hair.

Brushing and Daily Care

Correct brushing is one of the most important parts of extension aftercare.

  • Brush morning and night, and before washing

  • Always support the hair at the roots and brush from the ends upward

  • Use the brush recommended by your stylist

  • Never aggressively pull through knots or tangles

Avoid brushing extensions when the hair is soaking wet unless your stylist has advised it is safe to do so.

Heat Styling and Protection

Heat styling is possible with extensions, but it needs to be done carefully.

  • Always use a heat protection product

  • Avoid placing hot tools directly on extension attachments

  • Keep heat settings moderate and controlled

Excessive heat or incorrect placement can weaken attachments and compromise both the extensions and your natural hair.

Sleeping, Exercise and Lifestyle

How you treat your hair outside the salon makes all the difference.

  • Sleep with hair loosely tied or braided to reduce friction

  • A silk or satin pillowcase can help minimise tangling

  • Secure hair during exercise to prevent rubbing and pulling

  • If swimming, speak to your stylist about preparation and aftercare

Salt water, chlorine and friction can all affect extensions if not managed properly.

Maintenance Appointments

Regular maintenance appointments are essential and non-negotiable.

These appointments allow your stylist to:

  • check attachment integrity

  • adjust placement as your hair grows

  • protect the health of your natural hair

  • address any issues early

Delaying maintenance can lead to tangling, breakage or unnecessary stress on your natural hair.

Product Choice Matters

Professional product recommendations are part of your extension care plan.

Some products can cause build-up, slippage or dryness, even if they work well on natural hair. Using the products recommended by your stylist supports both the extensions and your natural hair over time.

When to Contact the Salon

Please contact us promptly if you notice:

  • ongoing tightness or discomfort

  • excessive shedding or tangling

  • slipping or movement of extensions

  • anything that feels unusual or concerning

Most issues can be resolved quickly when addressed early.

A Final Note

Hair extensions work best when treated with care. When clients follow their stylist’s advice and commit to proper aftercare, results wear beautifully and comfortably over time.

If you’re ever unsure, our team is here to guide you.
